The subdirectories in the repository are a bit more interesting, so let s take a closer look at them. First is the conf directory, which holds Subversion configuration files specific to this repository. Currently the only files within conf are authz (a sample authorization file), passwd (a sample svnserve password file), and svnserve.conf (the configuration file that controls svnserve s behavior when accessing this repository). Next is the dav directory. This holds mod_dav_svn s bookkeeping data, and unless you re trying to modify mod_dav_svn source code for some reason, you won t need to worry about it. The next part of the on-disk layout of the repository is the hooks directory. Hooks are processes that are run when a particular event occurs, such as a user performing a commit, or a revision property being changed. Generally, these are used to enforce policy, such as limiting access to certain parts of the repository to certain users who can create and steal locks, and in addition to policy, to send e-mail when a commit has occurred. We discuss hooks in detail in the Hooks section later in this chapter. When using the FSFS back end, the db directory contains the FSFS filesystem revisions that hold the data you put in the repository. In a brand new repository, it will look like this: $ ls -l repos/db

We think this is a far simpler model to work with dialogs. You don t have to remember IDs, you don t have to pollute the mainline code with dialog creation, and you can use derived dialog objects directly to access values. The principle of this abstraction is as follows. As a first step, we abstract out the creation of a dialog and the preparation of that dialog into a class that identifies a base dialog. We call this interface IDialogProtocol. This dialog also has a show() method on it directly. These dialogs are collected and kept in a registry in the base class for an activity, and they use their IDs as keys. The base activity will demultiplex the onCreate, onPrepare, and onClick calls based on their IDs and reroute them to the dialog class. This architecture is further illustrated in Figure 5 6.

To make use of this framework, you start by extending ManagedDialogsActivity. Then you instantiate the dialogs you need, each of which derives from ManagedActivityDialog. In a menu-item response, you can simply do a show() on these dialogs. The dialogs themselves take the necessary parameters up front in order to be created and shown. Although we are passing a dialog ID, we don t need to remember those IDs anymore. You could even abstract these IDs out completely if you d like. Now we ll explore each of the classes shown in Figure 5 6.

The IDialogProtocol interface defines what it means to be a managed dialog. Responsibilities of a managed dialog include creating the dialog and preparing it every time it is shown. It also makes sense to delegate the show functionality to the dialog itself. A dialog also must recognize button clicks and call the respective parent of the dialog closure.
